The Maldives sells the world empty islands, and the state owns them all. In 2014 and 2015 more than fifty were leased without tender, the money routed through a state tourism company into a private firm's account and out in cash; an audit counted about 79 million dollars missing. The tourism minister pleaded guilty and was freed by commutation; a former president was convicted twice and saw both verdicts reversed. Around the theft: auditors removed for counting, gangs with a price list, a reporter abducted and never found, and almost no money recovered. Covers Ahmed Adeeb and the Ministry of Tourism, Abdulla Ziyath and the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation, Mohamed Allam Latheef and SOF Private Limited, and Abdulla Yameen and the State Trading Organisation.
