Ukraine, 1991 to 2026. A state that owned almost everything at independence was taken, piece by piece, by the people who ran it: a prime minister later convicted of laundering in California, a gas intermediary whose owners stayed hidden for nearly two years, a president whose files were thrown into the reservoir below his estate, a bank whose owners a London court found had defrauded it. Then Ukrainians built the machinery to fight back, and in wartime it reached the Supreme Court, the president's chief of staff and the prosecutor general's own office. Few of the accused have been convicted. Covers Pavlo Lazarenko and the Ukrainian gas trade, Dmytro Firtash and RosUkrEnergo, Viktor Yanukovych and the Party of Regions, Ihor Kolomoisky and PrivatBank, and Timur Mindich and the Energoatom case.
