Read it:
Sudan, 1989 to 2026. In December 1989 a new Islamist regime hangs a young man over foreign currency his family says sat in a safe; thirty years later its president is convicted over millions of euros found in his residence. Meanwhile men with guns become men with businesses: an army whose companies stay off the budget, a security service that buys gold and settles its own corruption cases, a militia whose commander's family runs a gold conglomerate. A European bank clears Sudan's dollars through New York; the gold flows to Dubai. A committee that tries to recover it is undone by a coup, and the armed businesses go to war. Covers Omar al-Bashir and the National Congress Party, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and the Rapid Support Forces, and BNP Paribas.
