Helsinki, 1969 to 1997. A Swedish-speaking Finnish student with a mail-order 386 and a half-finished terminal program posts a note to a newsgroup on 25 August 1991, says the thing he is writing is just a hobby and will not be big and professional, and gives away the source. Four months later he changes the terms, from a homemade rule of his own forbidding money to the GNU General Public License, and that change is what lets strangers build businesses on his work without asking him. This is an account of the decision, of the collapsing Finland that produced it, and of what happened when the mail began arriving faster than one man could read it. Covers Linus Torvalds.
