Cambridge, Los Angeles, Reno and Las Vegas, 1955 to 1966. A mathematics instructor with borrowed time on an IBM 704 establishes that blackjack, alone among the games on a casino floor, can be beaten by a player who keeps track of what has already been dealt. Edward Thorp publishes the proof, tests it on a stake put up by a New York parking-lot operator, and then publishes the method itself in a book that anybody can buy. The houses change the rules, change them back under pressure from their own customers, and settle instead on a countermeasure no player can complain about: more decks, dealt out of a box. The advantage was real, it was calculated, and it began closing the moment it was described in public. Covers Edward Thorp and Princeton/Newport partnership.
