Colorado, Maryland and Brooklyn, 1991 to 2021. A carpenter with a website, a student with a server and a plastics man with a waterproof box each build a business in a room that was never zoned, wired or insured for it. The room works until it does not, and the week it stops is the week each of them has to sign something: a lease with a personal guarantee, a purchase order for steel tooling, a payroll. What follows is an account of the specific conditions that made those rooms viable — cheap bandwidth, a credit card, a post office counter — and of what it cost, in money and in control, to leave them.
