Between 2001 and 2009 one man financed two companies that ran out of money in the same quarter. Space Exploration Technologies put three rockets into the Pacific before a fourth reached orbit on 28 September 2008, with the parts for one more vehicle in the building. Tesla Motors ended that year with nine million dollars in the bank, a car whose materials cost more than its sticker price, and a public deathwatch counting the weeks. Both were carried through the same December by outsiders: a government agency that signed a resupply contract two days before Christmas, and five noteholders who funded on Christmas Eve. This is an account of what the surviving documents show about how close each came. Covers Elon Musk, Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, and Tesla Motors.
