Read it:
New York and Los Angeles, 1964 to 1996. A mailroom clerk at a talent agency, a longshoreman's son sweeping out a recording studio, and a college student with a drum machine in a dormitory each build a record company, and each builds the same machine. David Geffen, Jimmy Iovine and Rick Rubin arrive a decade apart and find the same arrangement waiting: the company advances the money, the company owns the recording, and the artist repays the advance out of a royalty the company computes. What changes over thirty years is the size of the advance, the price of a disc, and who is allowed into the room. What does not change is who holds the master when the music stops selling. Covers David Geffen, Jimmy Iovine, Rick Rubin, Asylum Records, Elektra/Asylum, Geffen Records, Interscope Records, Def Jam, and Def American.
