Read it:
London, Paris and New York, 1869 to 1939, and the laboratories that came afterward. An Old Master has no cost of production, no yield and no settled identity, and yet in 1921 one English portrait changed hands for $728,800. This is an account of the machinery that produced a number like that: the estate that let the picture go, the restorer who lined and cleaned it, the connoisseur who supplied its author, the printed pedigree that supplied its history, the custom house that taxed it, and the auction room it was kept away from. It then follows the same pictures into the age of the X-radiograph, the pigment sample and the Rembrandt Research Project, and asks which of the prices survived being examined. Covers Fogg Art Museum and Rembrandt Research Project.
