Nepal, Pakistan, Tibet and the British military, 1950 to 2026. Fourteen mountains on earth rise above eight thousand meters, a category invented by surveyors and turned into a contest by climbers, and in 2019 a Nepali soldier named Nirmal Purja climbed all of them in six months and six days, against a record that had stood at nearly eight years. He did it with bottled oxygen, a remortgaged house, Nepali partners the sport had never named, and a phone camera. Seven years later an avalanche on Broad Peak killed him and nine others. This is an account of what that achievement was made of, and of what a record costs when the people setting it are the same people paid to make it survivable. Covers Nirmal Purja and Project Possible.
