Stockholm, 1856 to 1982. A former naval officer opens a private bank, has an enormous family, and dies leaving both to sons who barely agree. Over the century that follows the Wallenbergs build two instruments that outlive everyone who builds them: a holding company that keeps the shares a bank is no longer permitted to own, and a set of tax-exempt foundations that own the holding company and cannot themselves die, marry, divorce or be inherited. The result is a family that controls a large share of Swedish industry while owning comparatively little of it. This is an account of the machinery, the four successions it survived, and the costs — a blacklist, a suicide, a brother who stopped speaking to a brother — that the machinery did not prevent. Covers André Oscar Wallenberg, Knut Wallenberg, Marcus Wallenberg the elder, Jacob Wallenberg, Marcus Wallenberg junior, Stockholms Enskilda Bank, and Investor.
