Philadelphia, New York and Minneapolis, 1946 to 2024. Four Wharton students ask why eyeglasses cost more than a new phone, and put a prescription pair on the internet at ninety-five dollars. A suitcase fails in an airport, and two women who had worked on the eyeglasses build a carry-on at two hundred and twenty-five. A furniture man in Minneapolis, shut out of his father's store, takes a small division out of it instead and refuses ever to hold a sale. Each company begins with the same sentence said out loud in a shop, and each answer rests on a claim about where the money in a price goes. This is an account of three complaints about price, and of how much of what they alleged was true. Covers Neil Blumenthal, Dave Gilboa, Jen Rubio, John Gabbert, Warby Parker, Away, and Room & Board.
