The United States, 1878 to 1935. Electricity begins as a product sold by the lamp and ends as a service sold by the kilowatt-hour, delivered by companies granted a local monopoly and told in return what they may charge. Thomas Edison designs the whole system rather than the bulb. George Westinghouse buys the patents that let current travel. Nikola Tesla supplies the motor that makes the alternating system worth building. Samuel Insull, once Edison's secretary, works out the arithmetic nobody else had: that the cost of an idle wire is the industry's real problem, and that a monopoly asked for openly is safer than one taken quietly. Then he builds a paper structure on top of it that collapses, and the law is rewritten around the wreck. Covers Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, Nikola Tesla, Samuel Insull, Edison Electric Light Company, and Westinghouse Electric Company.
