Kansas City, Toronto, Paris and Key West, 1899 to 1961. Ernest Hemingway learns to write on a newspaper copy desk at eighteen, under a house style sheet whose first rule is to use short sentences. He spends four years afterward filing cable dispatches from Europe at a rate that makes every word cost money, and comes out of it with a way of writing he then sells to little magazines, to two New York publishers, and at last to a public that had not known it wanted it. The way of writing becomes a tradition — taught, imitated, parodied and blamed. This is an account of the working arrangements that produced it: the desks, the rates, the contracts, the editors, and the cost. Covers Ernest Hemingway.
