Koblenz, Germany, in the last years of the twentieth century. A boy failing at school leaves at sixteen and is hired — legally, on a registered contract, for a monthly wage — as a trainee in computing. For three years he spends most of each week inside a firm and the rest in a state vocational school, and at the end a chamber of commerce examines him and issues a certificate every employer in the country can read. He emigrates, sells snowboards online, and builds Shopify. This is the story of the institution that caught him: how Germany came to pay teenagers to learn a trade, what it costs the firms that run it, whom it rescues, and whom it has already sorted out by ten. Covers Tobias Lütke and Shopify.
