Read it:

Cleveland, 1863 to 1911. A twenty-four-year-old produce commission merchant with a genius for bookkeeping puts money into a kerosene still on Kingsbury Run and discovers the thing the drillers in Pennsylvania never saw: the wells were a lottery, and the barrel between the well and the lamp was not. John D. Rockefeller never drilled. He made his own barrels, made his own acid, sold the residue nobody else bothered to recover, and then used the freight bill as a weapon. In ninety days in 1872 he took twenty-two of Cleveland's twenty-six refineries. The question is what the arithmetic justified and where it stopped being arithmetic. Covers John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil.
