Baku and St. Petersburg, 1873 to 1920. A Swedish arms manufacturer sends his elder brother to the Caucasus to buy walnut wood for rifle stocks. The brother spends the money on a small kerosene works in Black Town instead, and the family discovers an oilfield so productive that wells there blew out of the ground untouched while Pennsylvania was pumping. Ludvig Nobel then did the thing the Baku producers would not do: he stopped thinking about the ground. He built the first ocean-going oil tanker, the first Russian pipeline, the tank car, the riverside depot and the sales network, and took the Caspian trade away from men who owned better wells. The question is whether the middle beats the ground even where the ground is this good. Covers Ludvig Nobel, Robert Nobel, Emanuel Nobel, and Branobel.
