North Carolina, New Jersey and the world's waterfronts, 1913 to 1970. Malcom McLean runs a trucking company and cannot get his trailers onto a ship without unpacking them. In 1956 he stops unpacking them. The idea is not a vessel or an engine but a unit: a steel box of agreed dimensions that a crane can lift, a chassis can carry and nobody has to open. Getting from one voyage to a world standard takes fourteen years, and the obstacles are not technical. They are longshoremen whose work the box abolishes, regulators who forbid a trucker to own ships, rival fleets with boxes of different lengths, and a patent somebody has to agree to give away. Covers Malcom McLean, McLean Trucking, Waterman Steamship Corporation, Pan-Atlantic Steamship Corporation, and Sea-Land Service.
