Read it:
St. Louis, San Francisco and Fresno, 1958 to 2015. A glassblower loses a two-thousand-dollar sale because he cannot take a credit card, and sets out with a friend from his old software company to remove the people standing between him and the money. What they find behind the card is not one company but a chain of them — issuing bank, network, acquiring bank, processor, independent sales agent, terminal leasing firm — each charging for work that is mostly real. Square takes a white plastic square, a flat rate and a new legal shape to the problem, opens card acceptance to millions who were refused it, and reaches the stock market in 2015 still paying the largest fee in the chain. Covers Jim McKelvey, Jack Dorsey, and Square.
