Washington and the Amazon, 1901 to 1919. Theodore Roosevelt inherits the presidency from an assassinated man at forty-two and discovers that the federal government has almost no instrument for governing the largest private organizations ever built. He borrows one from an unused 1890 statute, points it at a railroad holding company assembled by J. P. Morgan, and wins. Seven years later he leaves office at fifty and spends the decade that remains looking for something the size of the one he gave up. The last attempt is an unmapped river in Brazil that nearly kills him. This is an account of what a public office can be made to do, and of what happens to the man when it is handed back. Covers Theodore Roosevelt and the Progressive Party.
