London, Brazzaville, Algiers and Paris, 1890 to 1970. On 17 June 1940 a two-star general of twelve days' seniority leaves a collapsing France with a borrowed aircraft, a hundred thousand francs of secret funds, and no troops, no territory, no treasury and no legal standing whatever. Within four years he governs France. The volume treats that transformation as an operating problem rather than a miracle: a radio wavelength lent by a foreign broadcaster, a colonial governor in Chad who says yes, a network of couriers and crystal sets, a quarrel over who prints the currency, and an argument with two allied governments about which Frenchman they are obliged to recognize. It ends at Colombey, with the office he designed outliving him. Covers Charles de Gaulle, the Free French, and the Fifth Republic.
