Read it:
St. Louis and New York, 1847 to 1911. A half-blind Hungarian immigrant who arrived in America as a bought substitute for the Union Army takes a failing New York daily off Jay Gould in 1883 and turns it into the largest-selling newspaper on earth. Joseph Pulitzer does it by deciding that a newspaper is not a political organ with readers attached but a manufactured product sold in volume at a price below its cost, paid for by the advertising that volume commands. The machine he builds — cheap, loud, crusading, enormous — is copied by a richer man within a decade, and the copying nearly destroys him. What he was actually selling, and to whom, is the question the volume turns on. Covers Joseph Pulitzer and New York World.
