Read it:
Hamamatsu, 1906 to 1959. A blacksmith's son with no schooling past the village grades opens a car repair shop, then a factory to make piston rings, and for two years cannot make one that passes inspection. He buys machine tools he cannot pay for, loses one plant to American bombers and another to an earthquake, sells the wreckage to Toyota and spends a year drinking. At forty he bolts army surplus engines onto bicycles in a shed and calls it a research institute. Twelve years later his company builds more motorcycles than any other on earth. What this history turns on is not how a man recovers from failure, but what he had already decided a failure was for. Covers Soichiro Honda; Tokai Seiki Heavy Industry; and Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
