Kangwon province and Ulsan, 1915 to 2001. A farmer's eldest son runs away from a mountain village four times before he is twenty, carries rice on a bicycle through colonial Seoul, and is handed the shop by the man he worked for. Thirty years later he stands on an empty beach at Mipo with a photograph of it and a tanker design bought from a dying Scottish yard, trying to sell two ships from a yard that does not exist. He gets the order, then builds the yard and the first ship at once on the same ground. What this turns on is what a man will sign for with no plant, no credit and no record, and what the country behind him put behind that signature. Covers Chung Ju-yung and Hyundai.
