Connecticut and New Mexico, 1800 to 1945. Charles Goodyear spent the better part of three decades boiling gum elastic on his wife's kitchen stove, in and out of debtors' prison, and died owing money on a material that would make other men rich. Robert Goddard spent forty-five years building liquid-fueled rockets in a hayfield and a desert, mostly alone, mostly in secret, and died three weeks before the war ended that would prove him right. Neither man's lifetime was long enough to contain his own work. What kept both of them going was not patience and not genius alone: it was other people's money and other people's labor, and this account names, year by year, exactly whose. Covers Charles Goodyear and Robert Goddard.
