Read it:
Frankfurt, 1744 to 1812. A Jewish coin dealer in a locked street builds the firm that will finance Europe. Mayer Amschel Rothschild cannot own land, cannot join a guild, cannot walk in the public promenade, and cannot leave the Judengasse after dark. What he can do is sell rare coins to a prince who collects them, and the prince — Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel, who rents soldiers to Britain — becomes the richest ruler in Germany. When Napoleon's armies arrive in 1806 and the prince runs, the money has to go somewhere no French commissioner can read. It goes into a ledger kept by a man with five sons, who are about to be sent to five cities. Covers Mayer Amschel Rothschild and Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel.
