Augsburg, Innsbruck, Venice, Rome and the Hungarian copper mountains, 1459 to 1525. Jacob Fugger inherits a share of a weaving and trading house and turns it into the bank that finances the Habsburgs. His clients are men no court can compel: an archduke, an emperor, a pope, a king of Hungary. They can refuse to pay and there is no jurisdiction above them. Fugger's answer is not trust and not law. It is collateral in the ground — silver from Tyrol, copper from Neusohl — worked by his own agents and sold through his own warehouses, so that a sovereign who will not repay in coin repays in ore he never touches. He dies the richest man in Europe and is buried in a chapel he built for himself. Covers Jacob Fugger and Fugger.
