Paterson, Detroit and Flint, 1830 to 1947. Samuel Colt patents a revolving pistol at twenty-one, raises money from his cousins, builds a gun mill on the Passaic, and watches it sold at auction six years later. Henry Ford is put out of two motor companies in three years, the second of which keeps his money and becomes Cadillac, and leaves with nine hundred dollars and permission to use his own surname. Billy Durant assembles General Motors and is removed from it twice, in 1910 by Boston bankers and in 1920 by the du Ponts. Nobody at the time believed any of these failures would be worth anything, and this account stays inside the years when they were simply failures. Covers Samuel Colt, Henry Ford, Billy Durant, Samuel Colt's Patent Arms Manufacturing Company, Detroit Automobile Company, Henry Ford Company, and General Motors.
