Philadelphia, Woburn and Paris, 1800 to 1860; Worcester, Auburn and Roswell, 1882 to 1945. Charles Goodyear failed at hardware, was arrested at his creditors' request more than once, and spent three decades chasing a way to keep India rubber from melting, which he found and could not hold. Robert Goddard published a monograph on reaching extreme altitudes, was told by a newspaper that he lacked what high schools teach, and spent the rest of his life firing small rockets where nobody could watch. Neither man was serving an apprenticeship. The debts were debts and the ridicule was ridicule, and what came out the far end belonged mostly to other people. Covers Charles Goodyear and Robert Goddard.
