Britain, 1806 to 2025. James Dyson says he built five thousand one hundred and twenty-seven versions of a vacuum cleaner in a coach house at Bath before one of them worked, and he says the engineer he reached for through those years was Isambard Kingdom Brunel, dead since 1859. The two methods are opposites. Dyson could only afford to be wrong at model scale, and made himself right one change at a time, in private, for years. Brunel could not make a model of a tunnel or a bridge or a ship. He built the thing itself and was wrong at full size, in public, with other people's money and other people's lives. What a failure is for, and who is permitted to have one, is the question. Covers James Dyson, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Dyson, and Great Western Railway.
