Burlington, Vermont, 1978. Two friends from a Long Island junior high school open an ice cream parlor in a disused gas station because they cannot think of anything else to do. Within seven years it has a foundation taking a fixed share of pretax profit, a rule capping the highest pay at five times the lowest wage on the floor, and a mission statement with three objectives instead of one. Within twenty-two years it is owned by Unilever, and the terms of that sale attempt something no American acquisition had attempted before: to write the social mission into the contract and give a board the power to enforce it against the owner. This is the history of that attempt, and of what it could and could not hold. Covers Ben Cohen, Jerry Greenfield, and Unilever.
