Los Angeles and Little Rock, 1984 to 2026. A Jesuit priest given the poorest parish in his city watches its young men bury each other, decides the missing thing is not counseling but a job, and, when no employer will hire them, builds a bakery, then a payroll, then businesses that exist so the payroll can exist. Two thousand miles east, a man born while his mother was incarcerated notices that the room where men in his neighborhood already tell the truth is a barber's chair, and trains barbers to hear what is said in it. This is an account of two organizations that hired the people the labor market had priced out, and of the quarters in which each had to decide which objective would take the loss. Covers Gregory Joseph Boyle, Lorenzo P. Lewis, Homeboy Industries, and The Confess Project.
