Seattle, El Cajon, Salt Lake City and Minneapolis, 1907 to 2024. A nineteen-year-old with a borrowed hundred dollars builds a delivery company and decides that the people who run it should own it, forty-seven years before Congress writes the instrument that would have let him. A San Francisco lawyer invents that instrument anyway and gets it into a pension statute in 1974. Then three companies use it: a climbing-gear firm bought out of its founder's bankruptcy by the people who made the gear, a guitar factory handed to its workforce in stages, and a furniture retailer whose owner sold it to his staff rather than to anyone else. This is an account of how the paper actually changed hands, and what the transfer cost. Covers James E. Casey, Louis Kelso, Russell Long, and United Parcel Service.
