Four American companies were built by people who decided the business should not end up belonging to them, and each found a different instrument for saying so: a stock offering sold only to the residents of one state, a retirement trust announced on a founder's birthday, a minority stake handed across in slices, and a complete sale of a brewery to the people who brewed in it. Two of the four were sold on to multinational corporations afterward, once by the founders and once by the employees themselves. This is an account of what each handover actually transferred, what it did not, and how much of it survived the signature.
