Stockholm, St. Petersburg, Hamburg, Paris and San Remo, 1833 to 1901. Alfred Nobel takes a liquid that Ascanio Sobrero had made in 1847 and warned the world against, and builds around it the first genuinely international manufacturing company. The liquid kills his youngest brother in 1864 and then kills strangers by the hundred, in San Francisco, in Panama, in Sydney, on the Elbe below Hamburg, before he finds the absorbent that makes it carryable. He spends thirty years making blasting agents that armies also buy, and the last year of his life under a will that gives the money away. The question the volume turns on is whether that will is an apology, an argument, or a piece of engineering. Covers Alfred Nobel.
