Read it:
An Army engineer who had just finished the Pentagon and a theoretical physicist with no administrative experience and a file full of communist friends were put together in September 1942 and told to build a weapon nobody had built. They chose a boys' school on a mesa in northern New Mexico, fenced it, filled it with six thousand people, and in twenty-seven months produced two working designs from a discovery that was four years old. On 16 July 1945 they fired one in the desert. Three weeks later one of each design was used on a city. The rest of both their lives was spent arguing about what that meant, in public, under oath, and against each other. Covers J. Robert Oppenheimer, Leslie R. Groves, and Manhattan Engineer District.
