New Bedford and New York, 1834 to 1916. Hetty Howland Robinson is born into a Quaker whaling fortune, loses a two-million-dollar will case on a rule of evidence, and spends the next half century lending money against paper that other people cannot hold. She takes first mortgages, buys railroad bonds out of receivership, keeps cash when nobody else has any, and dies with an estate the newspapers put at a hundred million dollars. The same newspapers made her a miser, a witch, and a mother who carried her son to a charity ward. What the probate files, the mortgage indexes and the printed court records show is a different woman, and the distance between the two is the subject here.
