Read it:

Chicago and Stockholm, 1880 to 1938. Samuel Insull builds the American electric utility and then builds a tower of holding companies on top of it. Ivar Kreuger buys the world's match factories and lends dollars to governments in return for the right to sell matches inside their borders. Both raise their money from small American investors, and both assemble structures that no outsider can read from outside: not a banker, not an accountant, not a state commission. Insull's fails in April 1932 and he is tried three times and acquitted three times. Kreuger's fails in March 1932 and he is found shot in a Paris apartment. What the structures actually were is the subject here.
