Read it:
New York, 1836 to 1892. Jay Gould leaves a Catskill tannery for Wall Street and spends thirty years buying claims on things other men built. He takes the Erie Railway away from Cornelius Vanderbilt by printing shares faster than Vanderbilt can buy them, tries to corner the nation's gold in September 1869 with the president's brother-in-law on his books, and dies holding the telegraph monopoly and something near a sixth of American railroad mileage. A congressional committee, twenty-five years of litigation and a shelf of hostile biographies describe him. The committee and the courts left documents. Most of the biographies are evidence about their authors. Separating the two is the work here.
