Read it:
Austin, Texas, 1983 to 2007. A nineteen-year-old buys unsold IBM machines from dealers who cannot move them, improves them, and sells them out of a dormitory room. He incorporates in May 1984 with the thousand dollars Texas law requires, advertises in the back pages of computer magazines, and builds nothing until somebody has ordered it. Twenty-three years later his company reports four days of inventory against an industry that carries eighty, takes the customer's money weeks before it pays its suppliers, and then, having won the argument, puts its machines on a shelf in a Walmart. What the record allows is an unusually exact account of why holding stock costs money, and of what happens when a company runs out of stock to stop holding. Covers Michael Dell and Dell Computer Corporation.
