Read it:
New York, 1908 to 2004. A Queens hardware dealer's daughter sells her uncle's face cream in beauty parlors by putting it on the customer with her own hands, then talks her way onto the main floor of Saks Fifth Avenue with an order worth eight hundred and ten dollars. What she builds over the next fifty years is not a product but an arrangement: a few square feet of borrowed floor inside somebody else's store, a woman standing behind it whose loyalty runs to the brand and not to the shop, and a thing given away that turns a passerby into a customer. The company outlives her. The arrangement does not. The only full account of the founding was written by the founder, at seventy-seven, against a deadline. Covers Estée Lauder and Estée Lauder.
