New York, Los Angeles and the internet, 2007 to 2023. Six American companies — Bonobos, Warby Parker, Dollar Shave Club, Harry's, Casper and Glossier — set out to sell pants, glasses, razors, mattresses and face cream with no wholesaler, no department store and no buyer in between, and told the world they had invented something. What they had found was a window: rented servers, a storefront for twenty-nine dollars a month, a payment system installed in an afternoon, and an advertising auction that would sell them a named stranger for a few dollars. The window stood open for about six years. This is an account of what was built inside it, and of what was left standing when it shut. Covers Bonobos, Warby Parker, Dollar Shave Club, Harry's, Casper, and Glossier.
