Pittsburgh and the Monongahela valley, 1848 to 1901. A Scottish weaver's son goes into a cotton mill in Allegheny City at twelve, at a dollar twenty a week. Fifty-three years later he sells a steel company for four hundred and eighty million dollars. In between he takes one lesson from the railroad that employed him — a manager who knows his costs can price below a rival who does not — and builds a firm on it. The arithmetic that drove a steel rail from a hundred and sixty-six dollars a ton to under twenty also took twelve-hour turns from the men who made it, and in July 1892 the two met on a riverbank at Homestead, where no law yet said who was permitted to bring armed men. Covers Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick, and Carnegie Steel Company.
