St. Paul and Baku, 1856 to 1920. Every American transcontinental before it was built on a federal land grant and every one of them went broke. James J. Hill built the Great Northern on borrowed money and freight receipts, reached Puget Sound in January 1893, and was the only builder of a northern line to keep it out of a receiver's hands in the panic that followed. Six thousand miles east, the Nobel brothers were doing the same arithmetic in reverse: an oil field with no way to reach a market, and a competitor in Ohio who already owned the way. Both enterprises had to manufacture the traffic they lived on. Both ended in a courtroom or a confiscation, and neither ending was about the building. Covers James J. Hill, Nobel brothers, Great Northern Railway, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, and Standard Oil.
