Read it:
New York and Washington, 1837 to 1913. A banker who held no public office reorganized the American railroad system, assembled the first billion-dollar corporation, and twice found the money that kept the United States Treasury solvent. A president who had inherited the office by an assassination decided that the question of who actually governed the country had to be settled in public, and chose a holding company to settle it on. Between them stood a federal statute of two sentences whose meaning no court had fixed, a Supreme Court that divided five to four, and a fortune that had started buying pictures. The window in which American law had not decided what a corporation was allowed to do closes here, and closes late. Covers John Pierpont Morgan, Theodore Roosevelt, and Northern Securities Company.
