The United States, Japan and a Moscow ministry, 1958 to 1990. Nolan Bushnell builds a business on a machine that charges by the play and then discovers that the thing he has made cannot be owned: within a year of Pong the same game is being built by firms with more factory than he has, and none can be stopped. Atari sells itself to a movie company, grows enormous, and collapses with the rest of the American industry in 1983. A Japanese playing-card firm solves the ownership problem with a chip soldered inside the cartridge. Isaac Larian moves those cartridges through American stores. Henk Rogers flies to Moscow in 1989 to buy the rights to a game the Soviet state has never thought to claim. Covers Nolan Bushnell, Ted Dabney, Isaac Larian, Henk Rogers, Atari, Warner Communications, and Nintendo.
