Read it:
Seoul, Los Angeles and San Mateo, 1989 to 2021. A Korean firm with no way to sell boxes starts selling hats instead. Two college friends give away a game built out of a modification somebody else made for free, and sell the clothes its characters wear. A former physics-software salesman hands children a set of plastic-looking blocks and a currency, and lets them sell to each other while he takes a share. Between them they retire the price tag as the way a game earns, and replace it with a shop that never closes, inside a product the customer is already operating. What it produces is an economy of items that do not exist, and a set of questions about who owns the playground. Covers Kim Jung-ju, Jake Song, Brandon Beck, Marc Merrill, David Baszucki, Erik Cassel, Nexon, Riot Games, and Roblox.
