The Bronx, Umbria and London, 1939 to 2020. A tie salesman born Lifshitz decides that what he sells is not neckwear but an America that never quite existed. A farmer's son in Umbria dyes cashmere in colors nobody has used, then builds his own payroll into the product and tells everyone what he pays. A magazine editor borrows her father's money, puts a London shoemaker's name above the door, and spends fifteen years watching other people sell that name. All three sell a material — the undercoat of a goat, the hide of a calf — and all three find the material is the cheap part. This is an account of what the story costs, who is paid to carry it, and who owns it at the end. Covers Ralph Lauren, Brunello Cucinelli, Tamara Mellon, Ralph Lauren, Brunello Cucinelli, and Jimmy Choo.
