Tuxedo Park, New York, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1917 to 1946. A Wall Street banker named Alfred Loomis makes a fortune financing electric utilities, sells out before the crash, and spends the money on a physics laboratory in a stone house behind a private gate, where he is answerable to nobody. An engineer named Vannevar Bush gets a single page signed by Franklin Roosevelt and uses it to put American science under civilian contract rather than military command. In November 1940 the two arrangements meet at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in a laboratory named to sound dull, and produce the microwave radar that flies on the airplanes. The question the volume turns on is what kind of room a discovery needs, and who is allowed to build it. Covers Alfred Loomis, Vannevar Bush, Bonbright & Company, Raytheon, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Carnegie Institution, National Defense Research Committee, and Office of Scientific Research and Development.
