Read it:
New Mexico, 1942 to 1947. An Army engineer who has just finished the Pentagon is given a weapon nobody has built and told to compartment the work so that no man knows more than his own bench. A theoretical physicist who has never run anything larger than a graduate seminar is given a boys' school on a mesa and told to make one laboratory out of people who had spent their careers refusing to be organized. What the two of them build is not a discovery but an arrangement: a fence, a badge, a censor, a weekly meeting where everything is said aloud, and a rule about who may be told. It works, and it is penetrated, and both of those facts are about the same arrangement. Covers Leslie Richard Groves, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Project Y.
